Investigation against NAV-DEM in Berlin closed

Two and a half years after the police raid of the Kurdish association NAV-DEM in Berlin, the investigation has been closed by the public prosecutor's office.

The Berlin public prosecutor's office has closed the closed against the board of the association NAV-DEM Berlin due to lack of sufficient suspicion. At the same time, the association and the board members are to be compensated from the state treasury.

The background to the investigation was an allegedly planned birthday party to mark the founding of the PKK. NAV-DEM was initially accused of organizing such an event. A search was even conducted not only in the association's rooms, but also in the rooms of the neighboring Kurdish Center for Public Relations, Civaka Azad - that were not even covered by the court order.

Now the public prosecutor's office has had to close the investigation. Attorney Dr. Lukas Theune, who had represented one of the board members, is not surprised and says: "The suspicion was very low from the beginning. The entire procedure seemed more like an attempt by the State Security Service to carry out a search on the premises of NAV-DEM under a pretext. But even this attempt at criminalization was ultimately unsuccessful."

Civaka Azad has filed a constitutional complaint against the search. A decision on this has not yet been made in Karlsruhe. During the raid in June 2018, doors and windows were smashed, and mainly information technology was confiscated.
