HDP’s Temelli: Öcalan is the key to peace

A solution can be reached, said Temelli, by recognising Öcalan as interlocutor of any peace process.

Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) co-chair Sezai Temelli spoke at the “Middle East Crisis and Democratic Nation Solution Conference” which was held at the Demir Hotel in Amed.

The conference lasted two days and Temelli held a press conference at Demir Hotel.

“The solution we can put forward for the Syrian issue, will provide important developments as to peace and democracy both in Syria and the Middle East and in our country. The debates in this conference - he added - are of great importance in this sense".

Temelli added: “With the crisis in the Middle East on one hand and and with the regime crisis in Turkey on the other, peoples of Turkey and the Middle East see no way out. The process we are finding ourselves in actually deepens the crisis. Turkey is in a deadlock situation”.

The HDP co-chair added: “If we were able to raise the democratic political struggle in Turkey, if we were able to move from this authoritarian regime to a democratic process, I believe that not only we would solve the problems in Turkey, but we would also be able to provide a solution bringing prosperity and peace in the Middle East. However, - added Temelli - when we look at the power today, we see that it is firmly intentioned to maintain this authoritarian regime through yet more war”.

Referring to the summit held on Saturday in Istanbul among Germany, Turkey, France and Russia, Temelli said that it showed that power is still approaching the issue with a poor understanding when it comes to solutions for the Middle East.

“The struggle of the people of Syria against DAESH mercenaries should be on the table”, said Temelli adding: "We believe that if the world public opinion, the United Nations and the Syrian people will really look at this issue with a peaceful solution in mind, then on the table there would be the will of the people, because it from that that a solution will come out. Yes, a democratic constitution is needed in Syria. - said Temelli - Syrian people need a common solution, and it is possible to find it with the unity of Syrian peoples”.

Temelli added: “The answer given to our co-chair Pervin Buldan by Ömer Çelik in his statement on behalf of the government showed that they keep excluding peace and prefer impose a war speech on the people of Turkey”.

Yet, Temelli said: “We said this before, we repeat it once more, to bring democratic life and a lasting peace to the society in Turkey we must stand up to the regime”.

Temelli ended his remarks by saying: “Perhaps one of the most important steps in the history of the Republic, which is still fresh in our memory, has been the process started by Mr. Öcalan. He is the interlocutor and we repeat this today. We call on the people of Turkey, - said Temelli - to the social opposition to stand side by side and work for a plural, democratic, secular republic, let's build it together”.
