HDP protests usurpation of people's will by the AKP

Selahattin Aslan, co-spokesperson of the Democratic Local Government Council of HDP said the usurpation of municipalities and of the popular will of the people continue after the elections.

Aslan said that after the local elections held on 31 March in which the HDP won back with a large majority the councils and municipalities that the AKP had illegally usurped by appointing its own trustees, illegal practices continue.

Aslan added that the government knows no limits and goes ahead with all kind of illegalities to try and snatch the municipalities legally and democratically won by the HDP:

Aslan said that a lot of practices, from X-Ray and identity controls, are used arbitrarily in local governments to remark that the central government does not recognise those who have been democratically and freely elected by the majority of people to govern the cities.

An example of this usurpation and abuse, said Aslan, was what happened on 29 May with Kayapinar Children's Creche which was built by Kayapinar Municipality and used as a nursery.

The government illegally canceled the agreement made by the municipality to run the creche and as a result children and families now are faced with the closure of the facility.

“This unlawful practice - said Aslan - is a clear violation of the popular will and amount to psychological violence against children.”

The HDP called “on the democratic public opinion, political parties and civil society organizations to raise awareness and sensitivity against illegal practices.”
