HDP co-mayors of Diyadin beaten by police while defending driver

Co-mayor's of Ağrı's Diyadin district, Evren Demir and Betül Yaşar were beaten and handcuffed by dozens of police officers.

Diyadin Municipality's driver, Mehmet Hayri Oruç, was harassed by the police while entering the building. Co-mayors Evren Demir and Betül Yaşar intervened and were beaten and handcuffed by dozens of police officers.

Co-mayor Demir was taken to hospital after being hit on the head by police. Demir was kicked and hancdcuffed to the ground. 

Co-mayor Betül Yaşar was also hit with a police baton. After the incident, the police confiscated the images taken by the municipality. Co-mayor Evren Demir said: “They beat our driver. We tried to stop the police. Then they beat us."

Dilan Dirayet Taşdemir, the city's MP who was in the municipality building when the incident happened, said that; "this is how the AKP-MHP fascism, which could not defeat the will of the people in the ballot box, reacts. They turned the municipality into a police station. There are no police checkpoints at the entrance of municipalities except in Kurdistan. People are not subjected to search, insults and harassment when they enter the municipalities. Such a special treatment is to be found only in Kurdistan. "

Taşdemir added that the "President and the Prime Minister should respect the will of the people."

Taşdemir pointed out that the images shot by the cameras of the municipality were confiscated and said: "When I asked the police why they were confiscating the security images, they said they had received instructions from the prosecutor."
