Families of prisoners launch hunger strike in Ankara

As support is growing for the hunger strike of political prisoners in Turkish jails, families of prisoners have started hunger strike in Turkish capital Ankara too.

As the massive indefinite-irreversible hunger strike in prisons across Turkey continues, with the longest one in Şakran on its 58th day, prisoners' families in Ankara have started a hunger strike at the Human Rights Association (IHD) branch office in capital Ankara.

Free Women's Movement (Tevgera Jinên Azad, TJA) activist Gülhan Özlü spoke on behalf of the families and recalled that over 200 prisoners in 22 prisons are on indefinite-irreversible hunger strike which is growing every day with further participation.

Özlü stressed that no officials or authorities have taken a step for a solution so far, nor has any concrete development taken place to answer the demands highlighted by prisoners.

Remarking that the health of hunger strikers is deteriorating and their condition is heading towards a critical phase, Özlü called attention to the increasingly ongoing unrestrained arbitrary practices against prisoners.

Families who have launched 2-day long alternating hunger strike in solidarity with the prisoners called for action for the resolution of the problems before irreversible health problems or deaths occur.

In the meantime, the alternate hunger strike launched by Solidarity With Prisons Initiative at the Democratic Regions' Party (DBP) office in Van has entered its third day. The hunger strike today has been taken over by a new group who vowed to continue their protest until the policies of isolation are abandoned.

On the other hand, prisoners' families continue their hunger strike in İzmir for 7 days and in Amed for 4 days.
