Diyarbakir Medical Association demands release of Idris Baluken

Physician and HDP MP Idris Baluken has been unlawfully imprisoned in Turkey for 1534 days. The medical chamber in Diyarbakir demands the release of their colleague.

The Diyarbakir (Amed) Medical Chamber demands the release of former HDP deputy Idris Baluken. According to the chamber’s statement on Twitter, the doctor and politician has been unlawfully imprisoned for 1534 days. "We can testify that Dr. Idris Baluken has fought for society's right to health, peace, democracy and human rights. He has been imprisoned unjustly and not in accordance with the law for 1534 days. Justice for all, freedom for Idris Baluken!" the medical association's tweet read.

Idris Baluken served two terms as a deputy of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) in the Parliament of Turkey. During the negotiations for a solution to the Kurdish question, which were later terminated by the Turkish government, he was a member of the "Imrali delegation" together with Sirri Süreyya Önder and Pervin Buldan, which held talks with Abdullah Öcalan, the leadership of the Kurdish liberation movement in the mountains and the Turkish state.

Baluken was arrested along with the then HDP co-chairs and numerous other deputies on November 4, 2016, and released at the start of the trial in January 2017. He was arrested again just two days later and sentenced to almost 17 years in prison a year later in Amed as an alleged member of a terrorist organization. His name also appears on the list of 687 HDP politicians for whom the Turkish judiciary is seeking a five-year ban from politics.
