Demirtas: Kurds can not be silenced with courts

Peace and Democracy Party leader Selahattin Demirtas says Kurdish people can not be silenced with courts.

Speaking before attending trial of 152 prominent Kurdish politicians in Diyarbakir Demirtas said defendant's appeal for defense in Kurdish should be accepted by Turkish court and he favors right to defense in mother language.

Demirtas asked Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan if the defendants were wearing headscarves will he still be showing the same attitude about right to defense?

In Turkey wearing headscarves in government buildings is strictly prohibited.

Demirtas also said its a big disappointment that Hizbullah members who are responsible for hundreds of murders walking free while Kurdish politicians are in prison.

"Our friends did not violate the public order. On the contrary their rights are violated by those who claim that they act to protect public order. You can not silence Kurds by courts. Mother language of 90 percent of the population in this city is Kurdish and three judges reject defenses in Kurdish inside the courtroom"
