DEM Party: Statement about Imrali should be made immediately
The Peoples' Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party has called on the government to lift the isolation of Abdullah Öcalan.
The Peoples' Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party has called on the government to lift the isolation of Abdullah Öcalan.
At a press conference held at the party's headquarters in Ankara, spokesperson Ayşegül Doğan highlighted the human rights violations at Imralı Island Prison, where Öcalan has been held since 1999.
"We want to make a renewed call to the Ministry of Justice regarding the isolation imposed on Mr. Öcalan and other prisoners at Imralı," Doğan said, adding: "This is a human rights violation and a crime against humanity that must be stopped."
Doğan continued: "Isolation is a severe crime against humanity. The health rights of those held at Imrali Prison are being violated. "We are not only calling on the Ministry of Justice but also the Ministry of Health. The human rights violations at Imrali must end. The health status of those detained there is a matter of concern and needs to be addressed."
Since his imprisonment, Öcalan's contact with the outside world has been extremely limited. His last communication with the outside world was in March 2021, through a disrupted phone call with his brother. Despite numerous requests from his lawyers for regular meetings, there has been no progress in over three and a half years.
Referring to the invasion attacks of the Turkish state, Doğan stated that the Kurds are struggling for existence in Syria, Turkey, Iraq and Iran against the attacks. She said: "This has been experienced very painfully before. No one, no power should take people to the days when they will experience these bad experiences again. An alliance to be established between Ankara, Baghdad, Damascus and Erbil should not be an alliance of war and conflict. If an alliance is to be established, it should be an alliance that will protect the people's gains against war, the opposite of what has been established so far. No power should confront the Kurds living in this territory. No power should account for this. As you will remember from history, the calculations made for this purpose are unfortunately in vain and unfortunately come with heavy costs. We call on all powers to stop making such calculations. Every calculation to be made should be about more peace and coexistence in this period. No Kurdish force should be part of these calculations."
