The Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Co-Chairs Tulay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan condemned the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.
Bakırhan stated on his social media account that they “reject in the strongest terms the arrest of İmamoğlu on fabricated grounds and political motives.”
Bakırhan said, “The coup against the will of 16 million people has triggered further political, economic and social tensions in Turkey. I condemn in the strongest terms this unlawfulness that disregards the right of the people of Istanbul to elect and transforms the judiciary into an instrument of political intervention. I call for a swift reversal of this decision. We will continue our struggle against the usurpation of will, from Hakkari to Istanbul, with determination!”
Tülay Hatimoğulları described the arrest as a “coup against justice and democracy” and said, “It has already gone down in history as a black stain.”
Tülay Hatimoğulları condemned the arrest in the strongest way, saying: “We call for a review of this decision regarding Mr. İmamoğlu and for the immediate release of all those arrested along with him. No one has the right to interfere with the will of the people by using the judiciary for their own benefit to the detriment of 85 million people!”
