Co-mayors of Malazgirt sentenced to prison

A court charged former Malazgirt Municipality co-mayors, Halis Coşkun and Memnune Söylemez, with "being members of an illegal organization". Coşkun was sentenced to 12 years and Söylemez to 8 years and 6 months in prison.

Former Malazgirt Municipality co-mayors, Halis Coşkun and Memnune Söylemez, were in court on Monday.

The co-mayors, who have been in prison since November 2016, attended the hearing held at Muş 2nd High Criminal Court via SEGBiS (video) from Patnos L Type Closed Prison. They were accused of “being members of an illegal organization”.

Coşkun and Söylemez's lawyers were also present in court. After the identification procedure, lawyers demanded the release of Coşkun and Söylemez.

The court however sentenced Coşkun to 12 years and Söylemez to 8 years and 6 months in prison.
