Ceasefire negotiations continue as death toll in Gaza increases

The Hamas Health Ministry announced that the death toll in the Gaza Strip since 7 October has exceeded 37,200, while ceasefire negotiations continue. Hamas allegedly asked for written assurances from the US.

The Health Ministry of the Hamas-controlled government in Gaza announced on Wednesday that the death toll in the Gaza Strip has reached 37,202 so far in the war that began more than eight months ago.

At least 38 people have been killed in the last 24 hours, the statement said, adding that 84,932 people have been injured in the Gaza Strip since 7 October.

Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said on Wednesday that there is a clear and firm call to end the war in Gaza, Reuters reported.

The current proposal for a ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave is the best way to bridge gaps between Hamas and Israel, he added.

"We are witnessing a shift in this conflict in the recent period and there is a clear and firm call to end this war", Sheikh Mohammed said during a press conference in Doha with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Blinken, on a four-country swing around the Middle East to push Hamas to accept the truce plan, will meet the top leadership in the gas-rich Gulf state, which has transmitted messages to the Palestinian militant group, AFP reported.

According to the report, Hamas, responding to the plan laid out on May 31 by President Joe Biden, proposed amendments late Tuesday including a ceasefire timeline and the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, according to a source familiar with the talks.

The Biden plan calls for an Israeli withdrawal from "major population centres" and a ceasefire for six weeks, which would then be extended as negotiators reach a permanent deal.

The White House said Tuesday that the United States was "evaluating" the reply.
