Ayşegül Doğan: Öcalan’s conditions must be improved

DEM Party Spokesperson Ayşegül Doğan said “A new page is opening for us” following the call by Abdullah Öcalan and called for the improvement of the Kurdish leader’s conditions.

Ayşegül Doğan, Spokesperson of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), spoke at the 2nd Ordinary Congress of the DEM Party Şırnak Provincial Organization on Sunday.

Doğan commented on the historic ‘Call for Peace and Democratic Society’ announced by Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan through the DEM Party İmralı Delegation in Istanbul on 27 February.

Ayşegül Doğan said, “The call made by Mr. Abdullah Öcalan under very difficult and severe isolation conditions has opened a new page for humanity and the peoples of the Middle East.”

The DEM Party Spokesperson continued, “If society and the desire for peace do not go together, it will take a long time to achieve peace. Until now, we have been demanding peace, a free society, education in mother tongue and saying 'enough is enough'. Mr. Abdullah Öcalan's call is a beginning for peace and a democratic society. A new page is opening for us. Today, after 26 years, this truth has manifested itself.”

Referring to the photograph of Öcalan with the İmralı Delegation, which was also made public on 27 February, Doğan stated: “We saw the history of the Kurdish people in the face and eyes of Mr. Abdullah Öcalan. We say enough is enough. We also see the demand of our people who ask us when the isolation of Öcalan will be lifted. We hereby make a call; Mr. Abdullah Öcalan's conditions must be improved. This process must progress under his leadership. We are happy that Devlet Bahçeli and Erdoğan are taking the initiative at this stage. Yet, we do not accept the fact that one of the parties works in comfortable conditions while the other works under isolation conditions.”

After the speeches made at the congress, Taybet Bilgi and Ramazan Uysal were elected DEM Party Şırnak Provincial Co-chairs.
