Attacks continue despite ceasefire in Syria

Despite the UN Security Council resolution for a month-long ceasefire, attacks continue in Eastern Ghouta and Afrin.

United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Deputy Spokesperson Jens Laerke issued a statement in Geneva and said, “Clashes continue as of the issuing of this announcement.” Laerke said that this situation rendered sending humanitarian convoys impossible.

Meanwhile the Turkish state continues its attacks against Afrin. The Turkish government argued that the ceasefire does not pertain to them. News of clashes continue to pour in due to the invasion attacks in many areas throughout Afrin. French President Emmanuel Macron and UN officials have announced that the ceasefire does include Afrin as well. Close to 200 civilians have lost their lives in Turkish invasion attacks against Afrin, 28 of these civilians have been children.

In Eastern Ghouta, despite the “humanitarian ceasefire” declared by Moscow, aerial attacks by the regime and missile fire from armed groups continued on Tuesday. According to Syrian Human Rights Watch, a total of 9 attacks came from the regime front from 09.00 in the morning - in the form of one Howitzer fire, two barrel bombs and one aerial attack. Since the ceasefire went into effect, one civilian has reportedly been killed in Ghouta. According to Sana news agency, armed groups shot missiles into the humanitarian corridor from the side of the Al Rafidan camp.

According to the Moscow statement, the humanitarian ceasefire should be implemented every day between 09.00 and 14.00 local time. Regime forces backed by Russia had launched an operation on Eastern Ghouta on February 18, and there are claims that over 560 civilians including more than 140 children have been killed since.

United Nations Security Council had unanimously passed a resolution on Saturday for a ceasefire of at least 30 days.
