Attack on an Alevite place of worship a provocation IHD says

Human Rights Association (IHD) says the attack on a Alevite place of worship (cemevi) in Basaksehir, Istanbul aims to provoke a Kurdish-Alevite conflict.

The incident took place in the Þahintepe neighborhood of Baþakþehir, which is mostly inhabited by Alevis originally from Tokat and Kurds from Diyarbakýr and Van.

On Dec. 26, a group composed of approximately 100 masked men attacked the cemevi. Within a few minutes the group had broken the windows of the cemevi and of some cars parked in front of it.

When news of the attack spread to the rest of the neighborhood another group, consisting mostly of Alevis, gathered and marched towards the Kurdish organization's buildings in the neighbourhod. But the elders managed to calm the situation.

The ÝHD’s Ýstanbul branch in its recent report on the incident suggested that the event was a provocation aimed at provoking clashes between Kurds and Alevis. The ÝHD’s report reiterated the fact that in the past such provocations were known to have taken place, and though many of these past attempts could have been deadly in many cases people’s common sense prevailed and prevented any further violence.

The ÝHD report on the recent events in Þahintepe indicated that the residents of the neighborhood underlined that Kurds and Alevis were living together peacefully and that they were not able to understand why the media reported the incident the way it did.

The Hubyar Association, which is an Alevi organization, has even started to collect signatures for a petition to condemn the attack on the cemevi under the slogan “Tell dark hands to stop.”
