Ankara governate bans LGBT activities

Ankara governate banned LGBT group’s commemoration activities for victims of hate attacks.

The governor of Ankara banned the LGBT group’s activities on November 20, Transgender Day of Remembrance. Turkish governor said they fear that the activities may cause provocations.

The LGBT groups were planning discussion panels and film screenings on the day in Ankara.

Under the emergency rule, Ankara Governate has the right to ban all public and private gatherings for security.

There is no statement from the LGBT community after the ban but the LGBT groups usually defy the ban by Turkish authorities.

There is a growing oppression on LGBT community in recent years in Turkey. Turkey banned the annual gay pride rally in Istanbul last June, prosecuted the members of organization committee and attacked the demonstrators.
