Activists in Lavrio refugee camp celebrate 1 June

June 1 is an important date for the Kurdish Freedom Movement.

On 1 June 2004, the guerrillas went on the offensive with a number of actions, including the killing of high Turkish military commanders.

The actions marked a new departure after the abduction of Abdullah Öcalan in 1999 in Kenya and the attempts to destroy the guerrillas from within which followed the International Conspiracy.

For this reason, Kurds in many places have proclaimed 1 June as a holiday and struggle day and have, for years, organized demonstrations and festivals to mark the importance of that date.

Hundreds of activists in Lavrio refugee camp in Greece gathered for a demonstration under the flags of the PKK, KCK, YPG and YPJ. The anti-fascist slogan from the Spanish Civil War "No Pasaran" (They won’t pass) was written on a large banner. After the demonstration, 1 June was celebrated in the refugee camp.
