KDP excludes polygamists from leadership run

The official spokesman for the 13th KDP congress said at a press conference that Massoud Barzani has vetoed all the polygamists from the leadership in a bid to uproot the practice in the Kurdistan Region.

Polygamy is allowed under certain conditions in Islam and since the majority in the Kurdistan Region is Muslim, the tradition is practiced. The civil society organizations and women rights activist have frequently pushed the government to discouraged the phenomenon and uproot or at least limit it.

The candidate’s service at the party should not be less than 10 years, Khalid added.

From the 1,350 elected members to the congress, women have secured 10% quota. The rest of the total 60 leaders will be elected through secret ballot.

Some 150 female members have been elected to the current congress.

Barzani, the Kurdistan Region’s President, was elected Tuesday by majority as the KDP president. He assigned his nephew, the former Kurdish premier, Nechirvan Barzani, as his vice.

The KDP was founded in 1946 by Mustafa Barzani and since his death in 1979 his son, Massoud Barzani has led the party. The party counts as one of the most influential players in the Region.
