Guerrilla Hogir Mervan was killed in October in an attack by the Turkish state in the Gare region of southern Kurdistan. The People's Defense Forces (HPG) said in a statement that guerrilla Hogir Mervan was an "indomitable fighter and advocate of the apoist philosophy of free life." The HPG expressed its condolences to the relatives of the martyr and the Kurdish population.
The HPG Press Office provided the following information about Hogir Mervan:
Code name: Hogir Mervan
First and last name: Fırat Serihan
Place of birth: Batman (Êlih)
Names of mother and father: Asiye - Halil
Date and place of death: 10/10/2024 - Gare
Hogir Mervan was born in the northern Kurdish province of Batman (Êlih). His parents originally came from Eruh (Dih) in neighboring Siirt (Sêrt). The family migrated to Êlih in the 1990s. It was the peak of the scorched earth policy; a strategy of the Turkish state that included the destruction of villages, the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of people and arbitrary killings in order to break the back of the Kurdish guerrillas as part of the "contra guerrilla war".
Kurdistan was considered a lawless area and its residents enemies of the state. Due to this reality, Hogir Mervan became politicized at an early age. The fact that many people from his family's social circle had joined the armed struggle and some relatives had become victims of extrajudicial executions also had a formative effect on his subsequent life and political activities.
After a few years in Sêrt, the family moved to western Turkey. As an adolescent, Hogir Mervan witnessed the state repression. He wanted to fight against it. "It was a mission for him. Hevalê Hogir considered the preservation of the Kurdish language and culture as well as the social characteristics of Kurdish society to be his primary patriotic duty," said the HPG.
Guerrilla Hogir Mervan first engaged in political activism under the umbrella of the Revolutionary Youth of Kurdistan. This period also included a nine-month stay in Turkish custody. He saw the prison as a school and viewed the resistance against the system as a basis for intensifying his own work in the struggle of the Kurdish people.
After his release in 2010, he immediately sought a way to the mountains. He joined the guerrillas in the Medya Defense Areas and stayed there for the first four years. After his basic training, he continued to train both ideologically and militarily. With the rise of the reign of terror by the Islamic State in large parts of Syria and Iraq, he temporarily left the mountains.
According to HPG, Hogir Mervan fought in various liberation offensives against ISIS. He was injured several times, some of them seriously. "Hevalê Hogir devoted even more attention to moral participation in the fight," said the HPG. After the defeat of ISIS's territorial control, Hogir Mervan returned to the Medya Defense Areas, where he was deployed in various regions, most recently in Gare. "Our comrade Hogir, who has taken his place among the immortal heroes and heroines of our people, has left us important revolutionary tasks that must be fulfilled. As his comrades, we affirm that we will fulfill the mission that Hevalê Hogir has entrusted to us."
