Turkey is beginning to implement a new security strategy for the Iraq border. As a part of the new strategy the first outpost is set up in Gediktepe, near Semdinli, a town of Hakkari provice.
As Turkish army suffered heavy losses in attacks near the border region, Ankara started to implement a new border security strategy. This strategy consists of setting modern outposts, replacing ordinary troops with special forces and supporting them with heavy weaponry.
Gediktepe is probably the first outcome of this strategy.
Locals says the troops in Gediktepe are replaced with members of Turkish Special Forces and the outpost is now supported with tanks.
Turkish army also withdrew from some areas in the border region. This areas are reportedly at higher risk of attack by the Kurdish guerrillas.
On June 19, nine soldiers were killed and 14 others were wounded in a PKK attack on a military outpost in Gediktepe. Two soldiers died and two others were wounded as they stepped on a land mine in pursuit of the Kurdish guerrillas.
