Supreme Court confirms prison sentence for 5 people in Gezi Park case

The Supreme Court upheld the sentence given to 5 people in the Gezi Park case. Among those to remain in prison are Osman Kavala and Can Atalay. The court decided to release Mücella Yapıcı and 2 people.

The 3rd Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Appeals has completed its appeal review of the decision taken by the Istanbul 13th High Criminal Court on 25 April 2022, in the case regarding the Gezi Park protests (in 2013).

The aggravated life sentence for businessman Osman Kavala on the charge of "attempting to overthrow the government of the Republic of Turkey" and the 18-year prison sentence for Can Atalay, Tayfun Kahraman, Mine Özerden and Çiğdem Mater Utku on the charge of "aiding the attempt to overthrow the government of the Republic of Turkey" were upheld.

Mücella Yapici and 2 other people to be released

The 18-year prison sentences given to Ali Hakan Altınay, Yiğit Ali Ekmekçi and Ayşe Mücella Yapıcı were overturned by the 3rd Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Appeals, that ruled to release them under judicial control.
