Lawyer Özen: There is no legal explanation for Öcalan’s isolation

Lawyer Şivan Cemil Özen said that isolation is torture and a crime which is not subject to statute of limitation. Özen emphasized that the system targeting Öcalan has no legal explanation and called on all democratic groups and the public to be sensitive.

Speaking to ANF, lawyer Şivan Özen stated that isolation is a system of torture that aims to detach prisoners from life and values in an attempt to eliminate their social existence. He pointed out that the isolation imposed upon Kurdish People's Leader Öcalan is meant to target his social and political role. He noted that millions of people consider Öcalan as their political will and leader.

"People have the right to meet with their families and lawyers. Furthermore, allowing newspapers and books protects a person's existence. However, no meeting with Öcalan is possible. The disciplinary penalties imposed are not legal and legitimate. Therefore, there is no legal explanation for the current situation,” Özen said.

NO STATUTE OF LIMITATION

Özen emphasized that “There is no statute of limitation in torture cases, they end with death. Those who are part of the system in Imralı are committing a crime that is not subject to statute of limitation and will definitely be brought to court one day. "

HUNGER STRIKE IS A PROTEST ACTION

Noting that hunger strike is a last resort a prisoner may want to do, Özen continued: “The hunger strike is an act of protest and is within the scope of freedom of expression. The demands of the prisoners who have been carrying out hunger strikes for 120 days should be taken seriously and it should be ensured that Öcalan's family and lawyers meet him. All democratic circles should draw attention to this isolation and the prohibition of lawyer-family meetings. We have to fight for democratic values. Urban activists, all left-socialist parties, and non-governmental organizations should take responsibility to end this situation.”
