Kurdish refugee Selahattin Erkul to be extradited from Germany to Turkey

Kurdish refugee Selahattin Erkul was detained at the immigration office and taken to Hamburg Airport for deportation to Turkey.

Selahattin Erkul is to be extradited to Turkey. The Kurdish refugee, who comes from Şirnak, applied for asylum in Germany in 2022 due to political persecution in Turkey. He was waiting for the outcome of the asylum procedure in Kiel. When he went to the immigration office today to renew his residence permit, he was detained and taken by police to Hamburg airport for deportation to Turkey.

Erkul is facing a long prison sentence in Turkey due to ongoing proceedings. He is accused of alleged membership of a terrorist organisation and propaganda. According to him, the German authorities are aware of the danger. He claims to have submitted the relevant documents and not to have received any notification of a possible rejection of his asylum application.
