CPT vows to visit İmralı

Kurdish youths occupied the building of the CPT in protest at the CPT's silence on the aggravated isolation of Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan and the AKP atrocity in Northern Kurdistan territory.

A group of Kurdish youths occupied the building of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) in Strasbourg yesterday. The occupation demo was staged in protest at the CPT's silence on the aggravated isolation of Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan and the AKP atrocity in Northern Kurdistan territory.

The number of demonstrators, who were around 30 people at first, exceeded 100 during the following hours.

While the CPT building which was surrounded by police forces soon later, one of the demonstrators was detained and 2 others were released after an ID check. The fate of the detained youth remains unknown.

Breaking the windows of the building in protest at the police intervention, youths demanded a meeting with CPT officials who therewith accepted the request.

A 5-person group from the protestors told the followings in the wake of their meeting with CPT officials; "We staged this demo to denounce the aggravated isolation of our leader Abdullah Öcalan and to urge the CPT to fulfill its duties and avoid turning a blind eye to this inhumane treatment. We also emphasised that our protest demos would continue growing unless an action is taken to ensure Öcalan's freedom which is the only way to stop the Turkish state's massacre of Kurdish people in line with the war policies it pursues in Northern Kurdistan."

According to the group, CPT officials stated that they were aware of the situation and aimed to visit the Kurdish leader in İmralı in the coming process.

The occupation demo ended in the afternoon following the meeting with CPT officials.

Reports are coming through that some 8 demonstrators were stopped and detained by French police on their way back from the CPT building.
