Nezir Budak was sent to prison after serving as host at the Newroz celebration in the district of Diyadin.
Nezir Budak, co-chair of the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) in the Diyadin (Giyadîn) district of Ağrı (Agirî), served as the host at the Newroz celebration. After his speech at the event, he was summoned for questioning and detained at the Diyadin District Police Department.
Today, Budak was brought before the court and charged with 'terrorist propaganda,' after which he was arrested and imprisoned.
The justification for his arrest was the misinterpretation of his statement: 'Ji quntara Gilîdaxê hezar silav' (A thousand greetings from the foothills of Mount Ağrı). The police erroneously translated this phrase as "Salutations to the commanders on Mount Ağrı and Mount Tendürek."
In the absence of a Kurdish translator, the police relied on an online search engine for the translation. This incorrect translation was then used as the basis for Budak’s arrest.
