Activists in Istanbul and Ankara expose condition of ill prisoners Akay and Çakır

Activists in Istanbul and Ankara said that the condition of ill prisoners Soydan Akay and Semiran Erbağa Çakır is serious.

The Prisons Commission of the Istanbul Branch of the Human Rights Association (IHD) held the 595th of its weekly "F Sit-in" in front of the association building to draw attention to the situation of ill prisoners.

In this week's action, attention was drawn to the health condition of Soydan Akay, a 30-year-old seriously ill prisoner held in Marmara Closed Prison.

This week's statement was read by Meryem Bars, a member of the IHD Prisons Commission. Bars said that Soydan Akay suffered from joint rheumatism, hepatitis B, heart and prostate diseases, his health deteriorated rapidly due to the lack of adequate treatment and care in prison. She added that Akay has been kept in a solitary cell for 5 years despite these health problems. Bars said that Akay and all other seriously ill prisoners should be released.

The Freedom for Ill Prisoners Initiative made a press statement in front of the Human Rights Association (IHD) Ankara Branch on the 467th week of its “F Sit-in”.

Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Ankara Provincial Organization and Green Left Party Ankara Provincial Organization members participated in the action. IHD Prisons Commission co-spokesperson Nuray Çevirmen talked about the situation of Semiran Erbağa Çakır, one of the seriously ill prisoners in Tarsus Women's Closed Prison.

Çevirmen said that Çakır suffered many diseases, some of them chronic. Underlining that Çakır was constantly hospitalized due to his chronic illnesses and the drugs he has to take, Çevirmen said: "We demand that the release process be started, taking into account all the diseases and treatment conditions of the prisoner."
