Condemning the closure of Kompanya Gizingî Berbeyan media production company, MKG said, “You cannot silence the voices of women journalists. Our struggle for truth will continue.”
The Mesopotamia Women Journalists Association (MKG) made a written statement in solidarity with the all-female Kompanya Gizingî Berbeyan media production company, which was closed down after a raid by the Asayish (Internal Security Forces) on Tuesday afternoon.
The company, which is based in Sulaymaniyah city in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq) and also produces programs for Jin TV, said after the raid that no official notification was given as to why the closure was ordered.
The statement noted that the company was closed without any official notification or legal record, in cooperation with the security forces, the Iraqi central government, the Kurdistan Regional Government and regional security institutions.
MGK remarked that the production company, which has been operating in the region for 7 years, is the voice of women: “The production company, which makes programs for JIN TV, the first women's television, reached women from Hewlêr (Erbil) to Sulaymaniyah, from Kelar to Duhok and many cities of Eastern Kurdistan, and mirrored the fate of women who were burned to death."
The statement added: "The Iraqi Central Government and the Kurdistan Regional Government want to prevent the disclosure of the truth by shutting down the production company. As MKG, we once again express that we stand by Kompanya Gizîngê Berbeyan production company and we invite the authorities to reverse this decision as soon as possible. You cannot silence the voice of women journalists. From Gurbetelli to Gülistan, from Denizler to Hêro and Cihan, our struggle for truth continues and will continue.”
