Jailed journalists on hunger strike

A group of journalists who have been arrested in the scope of so-called KCK (Kurdistan Communities Union) operation have joined the hunger strike in Turkey prisons as of 5 November.

The Kurdish prisoners are on hunger strike since 12 September for the right to defense in their mother tongue and the ending of solitary confinement of Abdullah Öcalan, leader of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

Among the journalists who recently joined the hunger strike are ANF and Birgün reporter Zeynep Kuray and many other reporters for Dicle News Agency (DIHA), Özgür Gündem, Azadiya Welat, Fýrat Daðýtým, Demokratik Modernite.

The names of other journalists on hunger strike are as follows;

Azadiya Welat Chief Editor Tayip Temel in Diyarbakýr D Type Prison and Özgür Halk magazine employee Ömer Faruk Çalýþkan in Kandýra F Type Prison No 2 have been on fast since 12 September,

DIHA Editor in Chief Fatma Koçak and Özgür Gündem Editor Ayþe Oyman in Bakýrköy Women’s Prison since 24 September,

DIHA employee Pervin Yerlikaya Babir in Bakýrköy Women’s Prison, DIHA Þýrnak reporter Faysal Tunç in Rize Kalkandere L Type Closed Prison, Demokratik Modernite employee Selahattin Aslan in Kandýra F Type Prison No 2, DIHA reporter Þahabettin Demir in Giresun E Type Prison since 15 October,

Azadiya Welat Executive Editor Mehmet Emin Yýldýrým in Kandýra F Type Prison No 1 since 22 October.

At least 76 journalists, including 13 grant holders, are currently behind bars in Turkey. Most of the jailed press members are Kurds or working for Kurdish press. The number of jailed journalists in Turkey is higher than that in China and Iran.
