EFJ President: Journalists on trial for their work

Speaking to ANF about the ongoing trial of journalists in Turkey, European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) President Arne König said Turkey had a shocking record in terms of freedom of press.
EFJ  President König  is currently in Istanbul to attend the hearing of the so called "KCK" (Kurdistan Communities Union) trial in Istanbul in which 46 journalists (33 of them have been jailed since December 2011) are tried because of the news they reported.
"There is no reasonable connection between the accusations and the evidences put forward against journalists ", said König referring to the trial, and remarked that the journalists on trial are being accused for journalistic work done across the world.
König evaluated the KCK case as a political operation aimed at hindering journalists from writing what they see, know and hear. "This is an unacceptable practice which prevents the Turkish society from receiving information, and reveals the slow progress in democratic advancement in the Turkey's society. The Turkish government poses an obstacle to the presence of professional journalists, which is a must in democratic countries", added König.
König pointed out that Europe should be aware of the restrictions imposed on journalists in Turkey and take any measure to ensure a precise news flow in the country.
EFJ President said European parliamentarians should also put pressure on the Turkish state for the situation of freedom of press and commented Turkey's repression of press workers as dangerous.
