Dozens detained in new operation against Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality

A new operation has been carried out against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. A detention order has been issued for 47 people, including five mayors.

In a further wave of detentions targeting Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Turkish police have detained dozens of people, including several district mayors from the opposition CHP party. According to pro-government media reports, arrest warrants have been issued for a total of 47 suspects across the country as part of corruption investigations.

According to reports, those detained include former CHP member of parliament Aykut Erdoğdu, the mayors of Büyükçekmece, Gaziosmanpaşa and Avcılar districts, and the mayors of Ceyhan and Seyhan districts in the southern province of Adana The detentions are part of an investigation by the Istanbul Public Prosecutor's Office into alleged corruption in the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, authorities said.

Since the arrest and removal from office of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu in March, the state repression against the CHP has continued at full speed. The 53-year-old was detained and dismissed from office in connection with alleged corruption and terrorism charges. The action against him is seen as politically motivated and has triggered the largest anti-government protests in Turkey in years.

İmamoğlu, who rejects all allegations against him, is considered the most promising opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
