Mungan gave lecture at BDP Academy

Within the scope of the campaign launched by academicians following the arrest of many academicians and writers because of the lectures they gave at BDP (Peace and democracy Party) Politics Academy, poet and writer Murathan Mungan on 28 January gave a lecture at BDP Central Office.

“I am here because I think some people need to take a stance against the intensifying pressures on the Kurdish movement. It means a lot to be here today”, said Mungan. Is lecture was called “Ways to be recorded history”.

Speaking at the opening of the conference which was also attended by Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Group Chair Hasip Kaplan as well as many academicians and political party members, BDP MYK member Yüksel Mutlu reminded of the arrest of dozens of people within the scope of the most recent operations against BDP Politics Academy. Yüksel remarked that a declaration had been prepared for the denouncement of the operation by around 700 intellectuals and artists who have also started to give lectures at politics academies.

Speaking after Yüksel, writer Mungan pointed out to the pressures on BDP and its academies and said the followings; “What I tried to emphasise in my writings for Özgür Gündem, Özgür Politika and Özgür Yaþam papers in 90’s was the fact that each liberation movement needs intellectual institutions and people because they are part of the struggle to reclaim ones own identity. Should you fail to stage your own art and cinema, your art will be decided and staged by others who will create a history and culture for you following criteria they want. Even the most humanitarian films shot in Iraq don’t answer to the question ‘why is America in Iraq’. The word ‘occupation’ in these films is not even mentioned. If you don’t protect your own history, others will tell your history for you.”

Noting that all buried histories will one day be told and voiced again, Mungan said that; “The world isn’t a fair place and the oppressed people should therefore be much wiser and more conscious.”

Mungan also pointed out to the TV series shown on pro-community channels and promoted as handling the true stories of Kurds and added; “If someone doesn’t know the Kurds, he/she will no wonder assume they are as they are shown in these series.”
