Beştaş: They will never see a surrendering HDP

HDP MP Meral Danış Beştaş said, “There was no point anymore” regarding their decision to withdraw from the Constitutional Commission and that they will never surrender and never step back.

HDP withdrew from the Constitutional Commission yesterday during the session for the proposal to “lift parliamentary immunities”, an attempt at elimination at it’s core.

In her statement to the ANF, HDP Adana MP and Constitutional Commission member Meral Danış Beştaş said the party will discuss and decide how to proceed after withdrawing from the commission in the coming days. Beştaş said, “AKP brought its tyrannical presence to the Parliament. They are bringing the violent approach they had everywhere else into the parliament. They think they can cover up their crimes with their aggression, but they are gravely mistaken. The people and the world can see. If they had faith in their proposal, if they thought it was lawful and legitimate, they wouldn’t be acting like this. This is not an issue of immunity, this is just another move on their road to the presidential system.”

“WE TRIED TO PROTECT THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE”

Beştaş said they didn’t face an approach that was open to listening and taking them into account in the commission and stated: “After a while, there was no more point to staying in the commission. Bullying, provocations, harassment, insults... We didn’t have the mind to legitimize this either. In the end, we said they wanted to nullify the will of the people with this proposal and we tried to protect that will.”

“PARLIAMENT IS NOT THE ONLY MEDIUM FOR THE STRUGGLE”

Beştaş said, “They will never see a surrendering HDP. Our evaluations continue. We will continue our resistance,” and concluded with: “We are working still. As a party, as a group, as the Central Executive Committee, provincial and district branches, we will continue our activity and our resistance. We are not done fighting when we withdraw from the commission. The parliament isn’t the only medium for the struggle either. We will be attending the general assembly.”

HDP’s Meral Danış Beştaş said the party had a group meeting today and said Co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş will also be addressing this matter.
