People and co-mayors enter the municipality building in Amed

Co-Mayors of Amed Metropolitan Municipality received their certificate of election and entered the municipality building with thousands of people. Co-mayors greeted the victory of the people.

The Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Amed (Diyarbakır) Metropolitan Municipality co-mayors Doğan Hatun and Serra Bucak and district municipality co-mayors went to the Provincial Electoral Board at noon together with their party members and received their certificates of election.

Along with Doğan Hatun and Serra Bucak, Kocaköy co-mayors Mehmet Şık and Hanım Altındağ, Bağlar co-mayors Leyla Ayaz and Siraç Çelik, Bismil co-mayors Mizgin Ekin and Güven Tanrıkulu, Sur co-mayors Fatma Önkol and Adnan Örhan, Yenişehir co-mayors Safiye Akdağ and Mehmet Ergün and municipal council members also received their certificates of election.

The co-mayors were accompanied by Peace Mothers, activists from the Free Women's Movement (Tevgera Jinen Azad-TJA) and DEM Party Women's Assembly Spokesperson Halide Türkoğlu.

The co-mayors took a souvenir photo in front of the Provincial Election Board after receiving their certificates, and then went to Şêx Said Square to march to the Metropolitan Municipality service building. Doğan Hatun and Serra Bucak were greeted with applause by thousands of people gathered in the square and started to march to the municipality, chanting "Jin Jiyan Azadî" (Woman Life Freedom).

The co-mayors entered the municipality building with applause.

DEM Party Provincial Co-Chair Pınar Sakık Tekin was the first to speak to the press members at the municipality building. Starting her speech by greeting everyone, Pınar Sakık Tekin said, "We set out on a journey to govern ourselves and our city. We crowned this struggle with victory. We have received our certificate of election today."

Tekin pointed out that they won the elections under unequal and undemocratic conditions, in a polluted environment where cheating and schemes were practiced, adding, "We won this victory against those who deny and seek to destroy the Kurds. It was not only the Kurds, but all the peoples who won. While we were struggling on this path, we did not give up our struggle despite all the persecutions. As the Kurdish people, we will continue the struggle we have been waging for centuries. Victory is ours and will continue to be ours.”

Tekin stated that they attribute the election victory to those who were killed in the struggle for democracy, the Kurdish people, mothers and the peoples of Turkey and added, “We hope that the certificate of election will bring peace, democracy and freedom."

Lawyer Mehmet Emin Aktar said, "Selçuk Mızraklı sends his greetings. He has been behind bars for 4 years and 7 months without any reason. They arrested him to seize the municipality. For 7 years, they have left this city without a will. The people have claimed their will more strongly in these elections. I congratulate the co-mayors. They are shouldering a heavy burden. Let's support them. We said we would manage this municipality together. Let's protect it together. Good luck to all of us."

Metropolitan Municipality Co-Mayor Serra Bucak started her speech by saying "Dear mothers, our resilient women friends, our young comrades, the people of Amed, this place is yours. The municipality is yours, this city is yours."

Serra Bucak recalled that Gültan Kışanak and Fırat Anlı, the previously deposed co-mayors of Amed, were unlawfully imprisoned in 2016 when a trustee was appointed and Selçuk Mızraklı and Hülya Alökmen Uyanık, democratically elected and unlawfully deposed co-mayors of Amed, were also imprisoned in 2019 after they received their certificate of election. Bucak sent her greetings to them, saying, "This people's struggle will not end."

Bucak continued: “We promise the people of Amed that we will expose the actions of trustees and bring them before the judiciary. We would like to make one more promise; we said that we will govern ourselves and our city democratically and pluralistically with all the people of Amed and we have full will to govern together. We express our gratitude to all our people who supported us on this path and elected the DEM Party. They will not be able to usurp our will again. This will be the people's municipality for the next 5 years. The doors of our municipality are open to you until the end."

The other co-mayor, Doğan Hatun, said: "We are grateful for your labour. We follow the legacy of Selçuk Mızraklı and Hülya Alökmen Uyanık. The AKP interrupted the work of Gültan Kışanak and Fırat Anlı in 2014 to prevent these municipalities from serving the people. We will do and reconstruct what they left unfinished. From 1990 to 2016, with our party's local democracy paradigms, these cities flourished again. Those who lost these municipalities in 2009 stole the municipal seats and left. We will continue to work with all our administrations, together with our people, our party and our friends who have served the municipalities for 17 years since. We believe in our people, and you believe in us. We will start today and serve our people for the next 5 years. We will serve not only those who voted for us, but all 2 million people living in this city. We congratulate our people and promise them all 2 million residents are our people. Let's clean our streets together, let's love each other. We have succeeded, our success is great."
