Turkey seeks up to 142 years in prison for Demirtaş and 83 years for Yüksekdağ – UPDATE

Up to 142 and 83 year prison sentence has been asked for HDP Co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ respectively who remain jailed for 2,5 months now.

Indictments have been finalized in the investigation launched by Diyarbakır Public Prosecutor's Office against HDP (Peoples' Democratic Party) Co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ who both are jailed since November 4.

UP TO 142 YEARS IN PRISON ASKED FOR DEMİRTAŞ

In the indictment against Selahattin Demirtaş, it is claimed that the HDP co-chair “spread propaganda for a terrorist organization with expressions aimed to legitimate terror, force and violence” in the speeches he made at various dates.

It is also asserted in the indictment that the statements released by HDP Central Executive Board had influence on the organization of demonstrations across the country on 6-8 October 2014 to protest the ISIS aggression on Kobanê.

43 to 142 year prison sentence is asked for HDP Co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş who is accused of “administrating a terrorist organization”, “spreading propaganda for a terrorist organization”, “opposing the law on meetings and demonstrations”, “openly inciting people to animosity and enmity”, “instigating people to disobey laws”, “provoking people to commit crimes” and “praising crime and criminal”.

UP TO 83 YEARS IN PRISON ASKED FOR YÜKSEKDAĞ

In the indictment against Figen Yüksekdağ, it is demanded that HDP Co-chair be punished as “an administrator of an organization” in relation with her activities in the Democratic Society Congress (DTK) and other acts. Yüksekdağ is also claimed to have spread terrorist propaganda in her speeches at various dates.

Yüksekdağ is accused of “opposing the law on meetings and demonstrations”, “openly inciting people to animosity and enmity” and “provoking people to commit crimes”.

HDP Co-chair is also asserted to be responsible for popular riots during 6-8 Kobanê demonstrations because she was a part of the HDP Central Executive Board and undersigned the statement made on this subject.

30 to 83 years in prison is demanded for Yüksekdağ in the indictment.
