Shengal Diaspora Assembly ends the hunger strike in Strasbourg

Shengal Diaspora Assembly has ended the indefinite-irreversible hunger strike they have led in Strasbourg for 21 days upon the meeting with Öcalan.

Shengal Diaspora Assembly executives who have been on an indefinite-irreversible hunger strike for 21 days, demanding that the isolation of Öcalan be ended and status of Shengal be recognized, held a press conference after the statement made by Öcalan's brother Mehmet Öcalan who visited the Kurdish leader in İmralı Prison yesterday.

The hunger strike by Shengal Diaspora Assembly was ongoing in La Très-Sainte-Trinité Church in the French city of Strasbourg since August 23.

Speaking on behalf of the hunger strike organising committee, Sezai Uçar voiced happiness over the statement of Mehmet Öcalan who reported that the Kurdish leader was in good state of health.

Uçar remarked that their hunger strike has reached its goal, and that they will hold a series of diplomatic talks for the recognition of Shengal's status during the coming process.

Uçar announced that the hunger strike in Strasbourg has been ended like the one in Amed, noting that they will be joining the rally to be held in front of the Council of Europe on September 15.

Speaking after, Shengal Diaspora Assembly President Fikret İgrek thanked every Kurd, institution and European that has supported the hunger strikers since the first day and not left them alone.

German Left Party (Die Linke) member Werner Schmitt who came from Saarland to support the participants of the hunger strike stated the followings: "I admire these people who struggle for freedom and peace all around the world. It is a must to defend Rojava and Shengal, and requires commitment. I am pretty hopeful that these people will triumph in their struggle for freedom and their country. I feel shame for the German government for supporting the Erdoğan government and selling out the values of the West."
