The petition signed by 50 thousand people who demand Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan be tried in the International Criminal Court has ended with a rally in front of the UN building. The 50 thousand signatures will be presented to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights on Tuesday, May 24.

The petition started by the Socialist Reestablishment Party (SYKP) Europe Branch on January 2016 demanding the Turkish President be tried in the International Criminal Court (ICC) for his crimes under the motto “You Will Be Tried Erdoğan” has ended with a rally in front of the UN building. The rally was supported by many political parties and NGOs including Geneva Communist Party, AABF, Solidarite and DEMKURD.

Speaking here, HDP former MP Hasip Kaplan, who is a lawyer, recalled that there can be no prescription in the crimes against humanity, stressing that all those responsible for massacres will be tried in the Hague.

Kaplan criticised the attitude manifested by the European Union states and the United Nations with regard to the massacres committed in the Kurdish towns and cities of Turkey, saying; "The EU practices double standard and the UN doesn't remain loyal to its own values. Both of these know very well what is happening out there."

Kaplan's speech was followed by those of representatives from the Federation of Alevi Unions in Europe, SYKP, Geneva Communist Party, Solidarite and DEMKURD who all directed strong criticism on the immunity issue and ongoing military operations in the Kurdish region. Messages of Noam Chomsky vand Norman Peach were also read out at the rally.

The petition launched in January 2016 demanding Turkish President Erdoğan be tried in the ICC for the human rights violations and war crimes in the country and the region continued in cities across Germany, Switzerland, France, the Netherlands and Sweden and online throughout Europe. 400 thousand brochures were distributed in French, German, Dutch, Kurdish, Turkish and English to expose Erdoğan’s crimes in Kurdistan, Turkey and the Middle East.

The Cizre and Sur cases will be presented to the UN International Court of Justice along with Erdoğan’s relations with terrorist organisation ISIS and war crimes committed in Kurdistan, Turkey and the Middle East.
