Seventeen people remanded in custody after 14 July rally-UPDATE

Seventeen out of eighty seven people who were taken into custody in 14 July rally in Diyarbakýr have been arrested by a court of Diyarbakýr.

The banned “Democratic Resistance for Freedom” rally by Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) and Democratic Society Congress (DTK) ended up with the detention of 87 people, included 14 children, and injury of hundreds as a result of brutal police violence.

48 detainees were released after bearing testimony to the Prosecutor who referred 39 others to the vacation court for arrest. 17 people were remanded in custody for allegedly “spreading propaganda for an illegal organization” and “opposing to the law on meeting and demonstrations”, while 22 others were released  on conditions of judicial control.

BDP deputies Pervin Buldan, Mülkiye Birtane, Ayla Akat and Diyarbakýr mayor Osman Baydemir also sustained injuries in the banned rally on 14 July. BDP co-chairs Gültan Kýþanak and Selahattin Demirtaþ, DTK co-chair Aysel Tuðluk and many other BDP deputies were subjected to gas bombs and pressure water in the meeting area.
