Demirtaþ: Kurds should determine their own future

Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaþ and Gültan Kýþanak and BDP deputies visited mayors, deputy mayors and city council members of the party who have been staging a hunger strike in Diyarbakýr since 29 February.

Demirtaþ proposed that Kurds should go to polls to determine their future by deciding among “autonomy, federation, independence or nothing. We will agree to whatever result will come out from the polls", noted Demirtaþ.

Demirtaþ pointed to the efforts given by Kurds and to the democratic actions they stage to open the way to democratic politics and said that “BDP members are leaving their bodies to death in the face of the insensitivity of Ankara and Turkey’s western side. Our friends who aren’t allowed to do politics outside don’t see the prison as an obstacle to stage their democratic acts. Jailed deputies are progressing to the risk line in the hunger strike act which is however being turned a blind eye to by the country. The pressure of 90’s is applied by the AKP today.”

BDP co-chair underlined that the hunger strikes are carried out to demand the elimination of further deaths and bloodshed. “Our goal should be read and understood well. Despite our promoting and advocating a peaceful co-existence, some circles, including the government, want the separation of Kurds from this country. But we, the Kurds, as a matter of fact are as much part of it as the others. The Kurds have given Kurdistan, their homeland, to this country. The Kurds have the right to be equal citizens in this country. They should be able to receive education in their mother tongue and use their language in the public sphere”, said Demirtaþ and added that negotiations with the representatives of Kurds is the solution to this matter.

“Mr. Öcalan, KCK and the BDP are the interlocutors for any negotiation. The road map on living together is there. - he said - On the other hand, Kurds should go to polls to determine their future by deciding among “autonomy, federation, independence or nothing. We will agree to whatever result will come out from the polls. Egypt and Libya stand before us as examples of what will happen if the government intends to achieve something by means of force and repression. We don’t want to carry the coffins of our beloved ones any more. - he added - And those who don’t carry the coffins of their beloved shouldn’t do politics on top of the children of these people. The search for a solution cannot be avoided anymore as nobody has any patience left. Kurds aren’t a slave people, they don’t have to grovel to the AKP”, added BDP Co-Chair Demirtaþ.
