15 August celebrated in five cities of Rojava

Throughout Rojava Kurdistan several events were organised marking the 33rd anniversary of the 15 August Initiative, the operation in which the PKK launched its first action against Turkish forces.

In Dêrik, Qamishlo, Tirbespiyê, Serêkaniyê and Dirbêsiyê cities of Rojava Kurdistan, several events and marches were organised marking the 33rd anniversary of the 15 August Initiative, the operation in which the PKK launched its first action against Turkish forces, deemed by the Kurdish people the Day of Resurrection.

DÊRIK

Thousands of people from Dêrik region joined the event organised by Movement for a Democratic Society (TEV-DEM) in El-Beldî Theatre, that was adorned with banners of Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan and commander Mahsum Korkmaz, as well as flags and symbols of the Rojava Revolution.

The celebration started with a minute of silence, and a congratulatory speech by Cizîrê TEV-DEM Council chairperson Edalet Omer addressed to the Kurdish People's Leader, the fighters on the front, and all the peoples of Kurdistan.

Following a video presentation on the history of the 15 August operation and the resistance of the Kurdish people, theater group Koma Ava Mezin performed a play and reenacted the first armed action of 1984.

Music and halay dance was performed by the Group Serhildan, Group Tirbespiyê, Group Cûdî and Group Koçeratan.

The program continued with music and dances in circles.

QAMISHLO

The celebration in Qamishlo took place in Heysem Kiço Theatre near the city's industry section, and was joined by the region's people along with members of YPG/YPJ, Asayish forces, Kongreya Star, TEV-DEM and Martyrs' Families Council.

The theatre was emblazoned in flags of YPG/YPJ, pictures of the martyrs of freedom and Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan.

After the commemoration of all martyrs of the freedom struggle, TEV-DEM Council chairperson Fîroşeh Remedan expressed congratulations for the 15 August Initiative on the Kurdish People's Leader and the peoples of Kurdistan, and highlighted the importance of the armed resistance.

Following the speech and a video presentation, revolutionary songs were played by the band Koma Botan of Qamishlo's 'Mihemed Şêxo Center of Culture and Folklore', accompanied by the people with halay dances.

TIRBESPIYÊ

Upon the initiative of TEV-DEM, hundreds of Kurds, Arab and Syriac people from Tirbespiyê staged a march from Hêzil Culture and Folklore Center to the central park of Martyr Warşîn, carrying banners of Kurdish people's leader Adbullah Öcalan and flags of YPG/YPJ.

Placards were held high reading "The 15 August Initiative is the day of resurrection. The 15 August operation is the fulcrum where all freedom movements in the Middle East changed".

After the people reached the park of Martyr Warşîn and a minute of silence was held, TEV-DEM chairperson Bedran Çiya Kurd welcomed the citizens and congratulated the region’s people and Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan on the occasion of the Day of Resurrection.

Bedran Cudi stressed that the gains of humanity in Northern Syria have only been possible by the spirit bestowed by the 15 August action, and said, "Because the people came together on a basis of brotherhood and a common life, they could gain their freedom today."

After the speech, the people danced to music of Band Martyr Xebat from the Center of Culture and Folklore and musician Ridwan Dêrik.

SERÊKANIYÊ

Hundreds of people from Serêkaniyê joined the 15 August celebration in Martyr Bêrîvan Park with highest enthusiasm and festive joy.

Following the minute of silence, TEV-DEM administration member Cahid Hesen congratulated Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan and all the region’s people on the occasion of the Day of Resurrection, and stated: "A new history was written on that day. Because this day ended the peoples' helplessness in the face of oppression, we need to strengthen our struggle with the spirit of that day. We see today millions of people following that path."

After the speech, music was performed by the children's music group of Martyr Delîla, followed by the play 'The First Bullet', performed by the theatre group Koma Merwan.

The festival continued with halay dance at the music of Band Martyr Welat.

DIRBÊSIYÊ

Movement for a Democratic Society (TEV-DEM) organised a celebration at the school field of Rojava Youths Union in Dirbêsiyê city of Cizîrê's Hesekê Canton.

Hundreds of people from the region and Zerganê town joined the ceremony, the scene of which was adorned with banners of Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan and commander Mahsum Korkmaz (Egîd), flags of YPG/YPJ, and placards reading "We will free Leader Apo with the spirit of 15 August".

After a minute of silence for the fallen martyrs, TEV-DEM administrator Cahid Hesen first congratulated Kurdish people's leader Abdulah Öcalan, the YPG/YPJ fighters, and martyrs' families on the occasion of the holy day, and stated in his speech: "The 15 August operation laid the ground for the Rojava Revolution."

Following his speech, Band Tolhildan from Hesekê Canton gave a concert to which the people joined with halay dances and slogans demanding freedom for Öcalan.
