Voting ends in Istanbul

Polls closed in the mayoral election of Istanbul that has been repeated today after the cancellation demanded by the AKP regime that was defeated to CHP in 31 March election.

Republican People’s Party (CHP) candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu won the mayoral election in Istanbul in 31 March local elections. The election was cancelled by the Supreme Board of Elections on 6 May following an appeal made by the AKP.

People of Istanbul have gone to the polls once again today starting from 8 am. Sunday’s contest was joined by AKP candidate Binali Yıldırım, CHP candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu, Saadet (Felicity) Party candidate Necdet Gökçınar, Vatan (Homeland) Party candidate Mustafa İlker Yücel and 16 independent candidates.

Votes were cast at a total of 31,342 polling stations in 39 districts of Istanbul today. There will be no press coverage of the election until the broadcast ban is lifted by the YSK.

Sunday’s mayoral election witnessed reports of violations in many places. 11 people were subjected to procedures for violations such as photographing the voting paper, casting a vote in another person’s place and exposing the cast vote.
