Two youth activists arrested in Istanbul and Izmir

Turkish police have stormed apartments in Istanbul and Izmir and arrested two people. A member of the HDP Youth Council is accused of social media posts, and a student in Izmir is said to have founded a WhatsApp group.

Two youth activists in Istanbul and Izmir were arrested for their posts on digital networks. Instead of a police summons, the apartments of the two concerned were stormed by the police - the usual procedure against politically active people from the Kurdish and socialist spectrum.

The activist in Istanbul is Muhammed Ünal, who is a member of the Youth Council of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP). He was taken from his apartment and brought to the police station on Vatan Avenue. He is accused of social media posts of unknown content. According to the HDP Youth Council's legal commission, more than 16,000 of its members have been detained in the last five years. Arrest warrants have even been issued for more than 5,000.

In Izmir, university student Beyza Buldağ is accused of founding a WhatsApp group for protests related to the resistance at Istanbul's Boğaziçi University. Beyza Buldağ studies at Mimar Sinar University of Fine Arts and is a member of the Socialist Revolutionary Youth (SDG) in Istanbul.
