There are 260 thousand people in Turkey prisons

The number of detainees in Turkish prisons reached 260,000. There are 3,000 children in prison and 37 of them are under 6 months.

In the last four months, the Parliamentary Human Rights Review Commission received 1,102 petitions for violations or rights in prison.

In the prisons where most applications were made, about 50 thousand people were arrested for drugs and 44 thousand people were arrested on charges of "terror".

The Parliamentary Human Rights Review Commission convened to discuss violations of rights in prisons. The meeting shared information on human rights violations. As of 16 July 2018, the Commission received a total of 1,102 applications for violations of rights.

According to the minutes of the Commission, applications from prisons addressed issues such as arbitrary attitudes and operations, physical conditions, requests for transfers, abuse, torture and health.  663 complaints for rights violations were made.

The number of applications related to complaints and judiciary issues were 124. Furthermore, 25 applications have been made regarding the demand for reinstatement, mobbing and examinations. 25 were the complaints regarding law enforcement applications, maltreatment and torture; 5 those related to military problems, 17 to disability issues, 33 to legal regulation requests; 42 complaints were about commission and investigation; 20 about work issues; 148 about health issues, request for financial assistance, and social security.

Presiding the commission, the General Director of the Ministry of Justice Prisons and Detention Houses, Şaban Yılmaz, said that as of 31 October 2018 there were 258,660 people in prison, but that this number to date as reached 260,000.

While 199,000 are convicted, 58,000 are remanded in custody. The number of women in prison is 10,000, the number of children under 18 is  3,000.

The number of children in prison up to 6 years of age is 743, of which 37 are less than 6 months. The total number of pregnant women in prisons is 35.

The number of foreign nationals remaining in Turkish prisons is 7,897. Of these, 3,102 people are Syrian nationals.

Yilmaz referred to 'terror' related crimes and listed a number of organisations, as examples of "right and left terrorist organization".  He listed 'PKK, ISIS, PYD and DAESH'.

Yilmaz added that 336 people are under arrest on the allegation of being members of a "left-wing terrorist organization" and 335 of being members of a "right-wing terrorist organization".

According to figures released by Yilmaz, drugs related crimes account for most of prisoners. There are about 50,000 people in prison because of drugs. Of this number, 47 thousand in drug trafficking, approximately 3-4 thousand in prison for using drugs.

Approximately 60 thousand people using drugs and the first treatment is controlled by probation.

After drug related crimes, is "terror". The number of people in prisons for "terror-related" crimes is 44,000. Theft is in third place, and the number of people in prison for murder is 28,000.
