Tahir Elçi remembered in Perugia

A stone was lied in Perugia, Italy, to commemorate lawyer Elçi murdered in 2015 in Amed.

A stone to commemorate lawyer and human rights defender Tahir Elçi has been lied in the Armenian Park in Perugia, Italy.

Elçi, from Cizre district of Şırnak, was President of Bar Association of Amed (Diyarbakır), a founding member of Turkey’s Human Rights Foundation (TIHV) and a member of Human Rights Association (IHD) and Union of Bars of Turkey.

On 28 November, 2015, Tahir Elçi was shot dead with a single shot to the head as he called for an end to violence at a public meeting held beside the "Four-Pillared Minaret" of the Sheikh Matar Mosque, in Diyarbakir, Northern Kurdistan (South-East Turkey). “The situation is very bad, but I’m afraid that it will get worse,” he had said, in one of his last interviews.

In his speech on 28th November, he was appealing for a return to peace talks between the Turkish Government and the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

His last words before he was assassinated were: "We don't want clashes, guns and operations in this ancient place."
