Swedish MP to go on solidarity hunger strike against isolation

Left Party MP Daniel Riazat will go on a hunger strike in the Swedish Parliament on Friday to show solidarity with Leyla Guven and political prisoners, who continue their hunger strikes demanding an end to the isolation against Ocalan.

Left Party MP Daniel Riazat announced that he will go on a hunger strike in the Swedish Parliament on Friday to show solidarity with Leyla Guven and political prisoners, who continue their hunger strikes demanding an end to the isolation against Ocalan.

The press release sent to Swedish media stated that Leyla Guven is on day 113 of the hunger strike she has been on since November 7, 2018 demanding an end to the isolation imposed upon Ocalan and that the hunger strikes have spread throughout the world. The statement continued:

“The hunger strikers only have one demand: That the Turkish state end its inhumane practices against Kurds and end the isolation imposed upon PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan. Ocalan’s most fundamental rights are currently being violated. He hasn’t been allowed to meet with his lawyers since 2011, and it is a legal principle recognized by the whole world that prisoners are entitled to visits with their lawyers.”

The press release said prisoners throughout Turkey are going on hunger strikes on March 1 and added: “As such, we are launching a 3-day hunger strike to defend human rights in Turkey and show solidarity with Leyla Guven and other hunger strikers.”

International Left Forum Executive Board Member Yekbun Alp will also go on a hunger strike alongside Riazat.

Riazat and Alp will begin the hunger strike in the Parliament with a press conference at 16:00 and continue in the Stockholm Democratic Kurdish Society Center offices.

Meanwhile, Kurds in Sweden continue their protests in solidarity with Leyla Guven and other hunger strikers.

A group of Kurds gathered in the Stockholm central station put up a banner demanding that Leyla Guven’s and other hunger strikers’ demands be accepted. The protesters also informed the public about the hunger strikes and the isolation imposed upon Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Ocalan.

In Malmo, Kurds put up posters with Leyla Guven on them on billboards and poles in the city center and passed flyers informing the public about the isolation and the goal of the hunger strikes.

Sweden Democratic Kurdish Center also issued a written statement and pointed out that the hunger strikers’ health is at a critical stage, calling on all Kurds and allies to participate in the demonstration to be held in Stockholm on Saturday.
