Sinn Féin Gildernew MP on end of hunger strike

The Fermanagh and South Tyrone MP said: “The announcement of the ending of hunger strike by Kurdish political prisoners and activists is welcome."

Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew has welcomed news that the hunger strike by Kurdish political prisoners and activists has been called off.

The Fermanagh and South Tyrone MP said: “The announcement of the ending of hunger strike by Kurdish political prisoners and activists is welcome."

Gildernew who recently visited the hunger strikers in London added: “This comes after imprisoned Kurdish political leader Abdullah Ocalan was allowed to see his legal representatives on the Imrali prison island where he had been detained for more than 20 years."

The Sinn Féin MP continued: “Hopefully this visit, the second to take place next month, represents the first step towards the permanent end of the isolation of Abdullah Ocalan and towards his release to assist the peace process in the region. I recently met with Kurdish hunger strikers in London and their courage and determination was an inspiration. Sinn Féin will continue to stand in solidarity with the Kurdish people in their struggle.”
