Ross Greer a Member of Scottish Parliament for the Green Party has lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament condemning the trial of Figen Yüksekdağ and the clampdown against the democratic opposition.

The motion supported by MPs Ruth Maguire, Stewart Stevenson and John Finnie, is as follows:

“That the Parliament notes that 4 July 2017 was the first day of the trial of the co-chair of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), Figen Yüksekdağ, on charges brought by the Turkish Government; condemns the reported removal of international observers from the court; expresses concern that the charges brought against Figen Yüksekdağ are, it believes, designed to undermine democratic opposition to the Turkish Government; considers these charges to be part of a broader move towards autocracy in Turkey under the government of President Erdoğan; understands that there is widespread international criticism and concern regarding the reported mass arrests of opposition parliamentarians and party staff, as well as journalists and other critics of the Erdoğan government, and calls for what it believes are spurious charges against Figen Yüksekdağ, and other HDP parliamentarians, to be dropped.”
