Russia: Syrian army is preparing to resolve the Idlib issue

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Dmitri Peskov stated that the Syrian army is preparing to resolve the “terrorism” issue in the Idlib region.

Peskov spoke to the press two days before the Syria summit Turkey, Iran and Russia will hold and said: “The situation in Idlib continues to pose a special concern for Moscow, Damascus, Ankara and Tehran.”

Peskov added: “We know that the Syrian Armed Forces are preparing to resolve this issue.”

Peskov said, “A new knot of terrorism has formed there ,and that is pushing the general situation towards instability,” and added that the “efforts aiming for a political-diplomatic solution” are sabotaged by this “knot”.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson said, “The fundamental issue here is that this poses a significant threat to our military bases.”

According to Moscow, there have been dozens of attacks against the Hmeimim Russian Air Base in the Latakia province, neighboring Idlib.

Peskov said: “There is no doubt that this issue needs resolving.”

Peskov’s statements came after US President Donald Trump warned Syria, Iran and Russia about Idlib on Monday.

Trump had said such an operation could “cause a humanitarian tragedy”.

Spokesperson Peskov said, “Warnings ignoring the negative and dangerous potential for the situation in the whole of Syria show that there isn’t an extensive approach.”

Before Peskov’s statements, there were news that Russian jets bombed Idlib.

When asked about the matter, Peskov said: “I don’t have operational information on what our soldiers were doing there. I would advise you to appeal to the (Russian) Defense Ministry on such matters.”

London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights had announced that Russian jets had bombed Idlib after 22 days of no activity.

Peskov also said the Idlib matter is one of the main points in the triple summit to be held on September 7 in Iran.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani again as part of the Astana process. The timing of the meeting coincides with the preparations for the operation against Idlib.
