Piri asks why Election Council rejects claims by the opposition

EP Turkey Rapporteur questioned the Turkish Election Council rejecting the appeals filed by the opposition to re-count the votes in some places.

European Parliament’s (EP) Turkey Rapporteur Kati Piri posted a tweet about the local elections held in Turkey on March 31.

In a post on her Twitter account, Piri asked “How could Election Council YSK accept almost all re-count claims by ruling party, and nearly none by opposition?”

On April 4, Kati Piri posted on her Twitter account a quote by Czech-born British playwright Tom Stoppard, “It’s not the voting that’s democracy; it’s the counting.”

Rapporteur Piri also commended the HDP for the strategic vote in another tweet posted on April 1. Piri posted a photograph of herself and veteran Kurdish politician and Mardin Co-mayor Ahmet Turk with the caption, “Also congrats to #HDP for strategic voting and winning back mayors in cities that were taken from them in 2016. Pîroz be Ahmet Türk in Mardin!”

In another post on April 1, Kati Piri said, “Last night proved that an important pillar of Turkey’s democracy is still alive and kicking. Congrats to voters and election observers! Big Q is whether opposition’s win will be officially acknowledged.”
