Murder of 16-year-old by police officer goes unpunished

On August 28, 2015, 16-year-old Mazlum Turan was shot in the head by a police officer, allegedly for violating the order to stop. The prosecutor demanded impunity for the perpetrator.

Mazlum Turan was shot dead on August 28, 2015 by Turkish policeman Süleyman Esenboğa in the Kurdish town of Kızıltepe in Mardin province. Turan was claimed to not have complied with the policeman's order to stop.

The attorney for the Turan family attended the second hearing held at the 1st Heavy Penal Court in Mardin on Wednesday. Culprit Süleyman Esenboğa and his lawyer attended the hearing via video conferencing system SEGBIS.

Lawyer: He was shot intentionally

The lawyer of the Turan family stated: "A multiplied sentence should be given here. The bullet penetrated the back of his neck. He was shot intentionally.”

Prosecutor: No penalty required

The prosecution claimed that the defendant had not acted intentionally and asked for acquittal, defending that; “the fulfillment of a legal provision cannot be punished.”

While the demand for Esenboğa’s arrest was rejected, the next trial was scheduled for 18 October.
