Left Party's Schimke: Isolation on Öcalan is unacceptable

German Left Party Ludwigsburg Chairperson Peter Schimke demanded an end to the isolation of Kurdish People’s Leader and Germany’s ban on Kurdish symbols.

The sit-in launched in front of the Council of Europe (CoE) and Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) on October 23 for the health and security conditions of Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan, has left one month behind.

Demonstrators continue their action with resolve despite winter conditions. Several European delegations have visited the demonstrations so far.

German Left Party Ludwigsburg Chairperson Peter Schimke also visited the sit-in and gave a message of solidarity with the demand of demonstrators.

Schimke said: “In my opinion, isolation is a wrong act, regardless of who is subjected to it. This is a crime against humanity and it is especially unacceptable when imposed on the leader of a people. Öcalan must be enabled to meet with his family and lawyers immediately. We are in solidarity with the Kurds in their demand for an end to the isolation and we support this action of theirs.”

Calling Turkey an anti-democratic country, Schimke said: “Turkey engages in a ruthless practice against all the opposition in the country. The government of Turkey is a fascist one and everyone around the world should stand against it.”

Schimke also commented on Merkel government’s cooperation with the AKP, saying; “This is actually not an accord between Merkel and Erdoğan. This accord is a knee bending plan of the capitalist system in economic aspect. There is a bargain over people. This must be ended and anti-democratic regimes must be invited to democracy.”

Schimke underlined that: “The bans introduced against the Kurds in Germany are unacceptable. We should oppose these bans and give a political struggle in order for these to end. The ban on Abdullah Öcalan’s posters and Kurdish symbols must be removed at once as they constitute no threat at all.”
