KNK statement on Iraqi elections

National Unity is the key to make South Kurdistan a center of peace, KNK said.

The Kurdistan National Congress (KNK) has released a statement on the Iraqi elections.

The KNK is a neutral organisation with no party affiliation and close to none of the Kurdish parties, its concern being to work for the national and democratic rights of the Kurdish people in the Iraqi government.

The statement noted that six Kurdistan parties had rejected the results of the election, and added: “These partys’ representatives gathered in Sulaymaniyah and Hewlêr (Erbil) and rejected the election results. In spite of this, however, in general the administration of South Kurdistan has remained silent”.

In the statement, the KNK noted that in Bashur (South) Kurdistan there is an uneasy atmosphere after the events of 16 October and that the Kurdish parties in the Iraqi parliamentary elections had an opportunity to get together and work for a solution to the current political and economic crises. "Unfortunately, - the statement said - the crisis appears to be getting deeper in South Kurdistan”.

The KNK urged all parties in Kurdistan to move in unity by taking into account the interests of the people, demanding the implementation of democratic dialogue to try and find a solution to the current crisis.

The statement added: “The occupiers of Kurdistan are currently experiencing major crises. The invaders want Kurdish people to be dragged away from patriotism and into their own crisis and problems. The strongest response to these conspiracies is Kurdish national unity.

Bashur Kurdistan must be saved from falling into particularism and selfish interests. We must turn our head to the occupiers with a spirit of national work and strength”.

The KNK finally called for all Kurdish people, political parties, intellectuals and non-governmental organizations to stay away from the language of violence and to stay within the national consciousness discourse for the future of Kurdistan. "In the current crisis and chaos in the Middle East, we must work together to transform Kurdistan into a peaceful center. We can do this together by bringing forward a political will and our national interests”.
